Written by IT Week staff

What does your job entail?
I manage a team of 15 staff based across India, Australia and the UK, supporting approximately 5,000 users across the region. On a daily basis I have two key focus areas, management of Windows and Unix technology, and the deployment of CA’s Enterprise IT Management vision across the region. I am also responsible for ensuring CA complies with key industry regulations.

What was your first job?
Management consulting at professional services firm KPMG.

How did you get into the IT profession?
As a consultant, I worked on a number of projects from a process and project management perspective and fell into IT naturally as a result of the clients I was working for. It was the logical next step.

If you weren’t in IT, what would you be doing?
Probably a lawyer.

Which IT training courses or qualifications have proved most useful to you?
Those that take a business process management approach to IT in favour of technical training. My degree in information management has helped here, as well as Itil and formal project management qualifications offered by the Project Management Institute.

Which web sites do you have bookmarked at work?
BBC, Google and Hotmail.

How often do you check your BlackBerry?
Every time it beeps…this is quite often.

Which technology has had the biggest impact on your working life?
Messaging technologies such as instant messaging and BlackBerry. With resources across the region, I have constant access to the information and communication media I need to run my teams more efficiently.

Is now a good time to enter the UK IT profession?
Absolutely. There is a huge amount of potential and innovation in the IT industry. Some of this change is a result of regulatory requirements. However, more opportunities exist for people to grow into skilled careers by working with business teams to identify and ultimately deliver material value to organisations.
