The Conservative Party's shadow minister Theresa May has put forward a plan which would see company's that lose wages tribunals undergo a 'pay audit' of their entire staff.
The auditing call comes over reports the pay tribunal system is close to breaking point with Equal Opportunities Commission chairwoman Jenny Watson saying there had been a huge increase in cases due to 'no win, no fee' lawyers.
May told BBC Radio 4 that the Conservatives were determined to address the pay gap which meant that women were paid, on average, 17.2% less than men.
But it drew concerns from business groups with the British Chambers of Commerce warning that the proposals would add to the burdens already placed on employers.
