ZENworks to lock down USB ports

SecureWave will sell Sanctuary Application Control and Sanctuary Device Control alongside the Novell ZENworks desktop management system

IT Week Staff, IT Week 27 Jun 2006

Security software specialist SecureWave last week said that Novell will start selling SecureWave’s Sanctuary Application Control and Sanctuary Device Control alongside the Novell ZENworks desktop management system. The SecureWave tools prevent Windows client systems from using unauthorised applications and USB peripherals.

The move should see SecureWave tools being more widely deployed in enterprise IT systems. Dennis Szerszen, vice-president of SecureWave, said it may also lead SecureWave to produce a Java version of its Sanctuary management tools so that Novell customers can manage their SecureWave client systems using Novell’s ConsoleOne management console. Currently, companies must factor in the cost of a Windows system to manage their SecureWave deployment.

The Novell move appears to be part of a strategic shift by SecureWave to embrace organisations using Linux in their datacentres. Earlier this year, SecureWave updated its product to work with Novell’s eDirectory software. Previously, the SecureWave tools used Microsoft Active Directory to retrieve data about users and computers.

In an exclusive interview with IT Week, Szerszen said, “Novell has an enterprise-centric view of things that we really like. Identity-based, policy-driven resource management: it’s our view of life [too].”

SecureWave is priced per end-user with discounts for large installations. However, Novell will sell the tools at a fixed price of $55 (£30) per seat. The prices for European customers have not yet been announced.
