Q Some of the keys on the keyboard do not print out as stated.
For the @ key we have to use Shift and 2 and the “ appears with Shift and @.
There are similar problems with other keys and there is no way to enter the
pound sign without using the Character Map software.

A What has happened here is that Windows thinks there’s a US keyboard attached to the computer not a UK one, so there are different symbols in different places.
To fix this left-click on the Start button, select Control Panel and then Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options. Left-click on the Regional and Language Options icon, the Languages tab and finally on the Details button.
The top menu selects the default language for the computer. Left-click on the down arrow and click on English (United Kingdom) – United Kingdom if it is included.
If it is not, click on the Add button and select English (United Kingdom) from the top menu. Click in the box labeled Keyboard layout/IME: and select United Kingdom Extended. Click on OK and then select this language from the top menu. Click on OK to save the changes.
It is possible to remove the US keyboard settings to prevent accidentally switching back again. Left-click once on its entry in the Installed services part of the window and then click on the Remove button. You may need to restart your computer to finalise the changes.
