Q Every time I open Word to do a spot of writing, a box appears labelled “Security Warning” with reference to macros made by the Caere Corporation.
It goes on to say macros contain viruses that should be disabled. Pressing OK
closes the box. A similar thing happens when exiting Word. These warnings are
not destructive but they are annoying. How can I get rid of them?

A This is almost certainly a result of some third-party software being installed on your computer. In this case, the culprit appears to be a program called Omnipage, which was a piece of scanning software made by Caere.
Older programs that worked with Word (in this case, converting scans to text) used macros. To get rid of the macro warnings, uninstall the software: to do this click Start, then Control Panel (or Start, Settings, Control Panel) and select Add or Remove Programs. Scroll down the list that appears until you find Caere Omnipage, or something similar, and click the Remove button, then follow the instructions that appear.
If the messages don’t stop, or that entry isn’t in the list above, remove the macros manually from Word. In Word, click the Tools menu, then click Macro, and then Macros. In the box that appears, select the offending Caere macro, and click Delete. Repeat if there’s more than one macro, then close the dialogue box by clicking the red X button.
