Q Why does Norton Internet Security scan emails in Outlook
Express and Outlook but not webmail accounts such as Googlemail and Yahoo?
Eddie
A Norton Internet Security and other anti-spam software can only scan emails as they arrive on the computer. As webmail accounts are accessed via a browser, they are unable to stop the spam.
Both of these webmail services include anti-spam protection but it may have been disabled. To activate spam filtering in Yahoo mail, click on My Mail at www.yahoo.co.uk, sign in and then click on the Options link. Click on Spam Protection to customise and activate the spam protection.
We recommend turning Spamguard on and setting it to save messages to a bulk folder for one month. This gives you a chance to review the messages just in case a genuine email is accidentally marked as spam. Click on the Continue button at the bottom-left of the screen. If the top option ‘add the sender’s email address to my blocked addresses list’ is selected, emails from this address will be deleted automatically. The second option should be selected so that emails marked as spam in error will automatically be moved to the inbox.
Then click on the Continue button. The final options can reduce the amount of spam received by blocking images. The links used for images can often tell spammers that an address is active. There are three levels of protection: show all images, which is not a good idea; block images in suspected spam; or block all images. The latter is the safest and you can opt to show the images in a specific email once satisfied it is genuine. Make your choice, click on Set up Spam Protection in the bottom-left of the screen and then on Continue to options.
Googlemail should have spam protection turned on by default. Click on the Spam link on the left to view these messages. If a mistake has been made, the button at the top of the email can be used to mark it as spam or not.
