British computer users can now take advantage of the very latest and fastest form of wireless networking.

From May, network equipment maker Linksys will be supplying three products that use the Wireless-N (802.11n) standard.

In theory, this provides a connection up to 12 times as fast as that from a standard home wireless (802.11g) connection. It also has a range four times greater.

Existing wireless products already have more capacity than can be supplied through most home broadband connections. However, Wireless-N products will also be able to cope with multiple media streaming devices and broadband telephones in a home.

The Linksys WRT300N router will cost £130, while the WAG300N internet gateway (which includes an ADSL modem) will retail for £170. A PC Card adapter to connect a notebook computer to other 802.11n devices, including the above two routers, will cost £100. The company said that further 802.11n products were on the way.

The only potential problem for buyers is that the 802.11n standard has not been fully ratified. At the moment it is only a draft specification. So while these products should be able to work with similar kit from other manufacturers, there are no guarantees as yet.

It is also possible that when the full specification is made public later in 2006, devices such as these may not be fully compatible.
