BT reveals its broadband smartphone

The ToGo device will allow users to make calls and surf the web via WiFi

Written by Neon Kelly

BT has re-entered the mobile market with a BlackBerry-like smartphone that allows users to surf the internet while on the move.

The launch represents the first time the service provider has directly involved itself with mobile calls since O2 was demerged from the company in 2001.

The ToGo device will be supplied as part of BT's Total Broadband package and will allow subscribers to make calls and surf the web when within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

“Communications services are converging, and it is clear that customers want consistent access to the things that matter not only at home, but in the palm of their hands wherever they are," said John Petter, consumer managing director at BT.

Elsewhere in the sector, Apple and Vodafone Group announced plans to make the iPhone available in 10 new countries, including Greece, India and the Czech Republic.

In Italy, the device will be available for use over Telecom Italia's networks, in addition to Vodafone's. Until now, the iPhone has only been supported by a single operator in each country where it is on sale.
