HR transformation brings £1m in efficiency gains

Department for International Development improves processes and generates £1m savings

Written by Janie Davies

The Department for International Development (DFID) has reported major efficiency gains and £1m per year savings following a 14-month transformation of human resources (HR).

The department worked with IT consultancy Capgemini to develop and implement new online HR systems, standardising the processes used to manage 2,500 staff across 64 countries to make work procedures faster and more transparent.

Many routine processes have been automated and line managers have been given more control over recruitment, overseas postings, promotions, secondments, transfers and HR budgets.

The programme accomodates government's efforts to improve efficiencies, said Pam Jenkins, HR transformation programme manager at DFID.

"Our transformation programme reflects the drive across government for greater efficiency, best practice and standardisation of processes," she said.

"Working with Capgemini, we have placed ourselves at the forefront of that drive and are now reaping the benefits in our work across the world.

"Following completion of the project, DFID is firmly on track to achieve the expected ongoing financial savings of almost £1m per annum."
