How many people do you manage?
I have a team of 14 directly under me but I work with a virtual team of more
than 500 IT professionals.
What does your job entail?
My job is focused on addressing strategic business issues and providing
practical insight into the technology solutions available. My primary role is to
shape transformational change, especially where IT is a critical component.
What was your first job?
My very first job was delivering milk in Napier, New Zealand, aged 12. IT
retailer Computerland gave me my first full-time job, installing local area
networks, and providing PC service and maintenance.
Did you always want to work in IT?
I really wanted to be an air traffic controller, and was told that I should get
some experience in the computer industry before applying. I’ve had so much fun
in the IT industry that it’s never occurred to me to leave it.
Which IT qualifications or courses have proved most useful to you?
I wouldn’t say any of my IT qualifications have been really useful. For
me, it is all about leadership and having a robust methodology, such as Lean (a
generic process management philosophy developed by Toyota). Lean enables people
to structure a problem, and develop and implement solutions.
Which web sites do you have bookmarked at work?
I use www.live.com and bring together a collection of RSS feeds from
various web sites including IT Week.
How often do you check your BlackBerry?
I am not a big BlackBerry fan. I use a Windows Mobile PDA with live
push email, which I check regularly..
