Toshiba ships £499 laptop

New Satellite Pro models duck under the £500 barrier - not including VAT

Toshiba will today announce new laptops in the UK, including a low-cost model for under £500, and a new ultraportable range based on Intel's Centrino mobile technology.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro A10, available immediately, is priced from £499 + VAT, making it one of the cheapest laptops offered by a large supplier.

Aimed at business users, it will allow firms to cut the cost of equipping mobile staff for email access and productivity applications. The move follows Toshiba's launch last year of the Satellite Pro 2100 at a price of £749 + VAT.

Despite the low price, the Satellite Pro A10 is a full-specification laptop. All models come with a DVD-ROM or DVD/CD-RW drive, integrated LAN adapter and at least 256MB memory, and all can be upgraded to support wireless LAN connections.

Three Satellite Pro A10 models are based on Intel's Mobile Celeron processor, while a further two are based on the Mobile Pentium 4-M. The £499 + VAT model has a 2GHz Mobile Celeron chip and a 14in TFT display. The top-end model, priced at £899 + VAT, features a 15in screen, 2.4GHz Pentium 4-M and 512MB memory. The Satellite Pro A10 laptops weigh about 2.8kg.

Toshiba will also today introduce a new ultraportable range, the Portégé M100. Aimed at mobile business executives, the Portégé M100 will replace the previous Portégé 4000 range.

The Portégé M100 is based on Intel's Centrino mobile technology, and so has Intel's Pro/Wireless 2100 wireless LAN adapter as standard. It is built with the recently introduced 1.2GHz version of the Low Voltage Pentium M chip. Portégé M100 models have a 12.1in LCD display, 2GB of memory and weigh 2.1kg.

Toshiba said the Portégé M100 is basically a refinement of the 4000 series, and that buyers would be able to re-use docking stations designed for the older models, protecting their hardware investments.

Pricing for the new ultraportable range starts at £1,499 + VAT, Toshiba said.
