AOL and WebEx join for business IM

Instant communication system to incorporate security and management features

Written by Madeline Bennett

AOL has teamed up with web conferencing specialist WebEx to offer enterprise instant messaging (IM) systems, which are based on AOL’s consumer IM service but incorporate corporate security and management features.

The new system, codenamed AIM Pro, is based on the existing AIM program from AOL but will offer an interface tailored for business users, among other enterprise-targeted features. Due for launch in the second quarter of 2006, the service will be available in two editions - a professional edition for individual professionals and smaller firms; and an enterprise IM version, which will include centralised administration tools to help large companies control IM deployments and usage.

Both versions can integrate with firms’ existing directory services to manage user profiles. As well as promising secure real-time chat, users can also participate in conference calls and online meetings with other AIM subscribers through the service.

The service will also let users securely chat and collaborate with users of enterprise IM systems, including those from IBM, Microsoft and Reuters, said AOL.

According to figures from the Radicati Group, around 135 million workers are making use of IM systems at present. However, many business users currently rely on the readily-available public programs, such as AIM and Yahoo Messenger. These consumer IM systems often run outside of the control of corporate IT managers and could pose security risks and auditing challenges for firms.
