Moixa Energy has introduced a battery for portable devices that can be recharged from a PC or laptop’s USB port. The USBCell is designed to replace a standard AA battery in devices such as a cordless mouse, and removes the need for mobile staff to carry a charger, the firm said.
Available immediately, USBCell batteries are the same size and shape as the familiar AA format, but the cap lifts to reveal a USB connector, enabling it to plug into a PC or laptop for recharging. The aim is to enable users to replace both alkaline batteries and other rechargeable types with the NiMH-based USBCell.
"About 16 billion batteries are sold each year, and most get thrown away because they are single-use alkaline batteries," said Moixa managing director Simon Daniel. However, other types of rechargeable battery are inconvenient for users, he added, because they need a mains-powered charger when travelling.
Although USBCell typically takes about five hours to fully charge up, a five or ten minute charge will often provide enough power for a few extra hours of use, according to the firm.
Moixa plans to extend its product line with a AAA model, set to ship in January. The company said it is also working with the makers of mobile phone battery packs, and expects to unveil USBCell battery packs for phone handsets early next year.
The AA USBCell costs £12.99 for a pack of two, and is available online as well as through high street retailers.
