Digital home specialist Domia has become the latest vendor to address interest in reducing the power consumption of IT and office equipment, with the launch of a new device designed to turn off products that would otherwise be left on stand-by.
The Bye Bye Stand-by device features a plug socket, which is plugged into existing sockets, and a remote control. Electrical appliances, including monitors and printers, can then be plugged into the Bye Bye Stand-by allowing users to turn off an unused appliance or group of appliances at the wall with one click on the remote control.
A spokesman for the company admitted that the device was less well suited to working with PCs, which need to be shut down before the power can be cut at the wall, but said it was ideal for ensuring that power-hungry peripherals that are often left on stand-by overnight, such as monitors, printers and fax machines, are switched off.
Darryl Mattocks, managing director of Domia, said the product would be aimed at consumers, home offices and smaller offices, adding that independent tests had shown that installing a pack of three of the devices - which will retail at £29.99 - could cut electricity bills by an average of £38 a year.
The company also announced it is to install 450 of the devices at the offices of public relations company Weber Shandwick, although Mattocks admitted it was unlikely to suit larger corporate deployments. "With large companies they want to monitor and analyse energy use, whereas this device simply turns things on and off," he said.
"We are working on a more automated and sophisticated product that will also turn off unused PCs, which we plan to launch later in the year."
