Orange expands business line-up

New portfolio includes low-cost models for large fleet deployments and mini laptop for execs

Written by Daniel Robinson

Orange has released a new portfolio of business-focused handsets, including low-cost models for large fleet deployments, right up to a mini laptop device for executives.

For organisations looking to equip a large number of users, cost can be one of the most important issues, and Orange said it can offer the Nokia 2630 and Samsung Solid for under £70 apiece. "Some government departments have strict cost guidelines on new handsets," said Nick Horton, head of business devices for Orange.

The Nokia 2630, available now, is a standard talk-and-text device with a very slimline design, while the Samsung Solid, due December, is aimed at field-based workers such as engineers needing a more robust handset. "These users want something can withstand knocks, but it's not IP54 rated – just a good, rugged design," said Horton.

Available from December is HTC's Shift mini laptop and the P6500, a wireless PDA aimed at field workers such as the transport and logistics industry. Orange is the only carrier that will have these two devices in the UK, Horton said.

The Shift is ideal for executives that want the best of both worlds, according to Orange, as it can boot into Windows Vista for access to standard business applications, or Windows Mobile if they just need to access their email and calendar. ‘It is a good choice for lawyers and other professionals that spend lot of time with customers at their premises,’ said Horton. It is expected to cost £500 to £1000.

Orange also now has available the Nokia E61i smartphone and the HTC TyTN II, a mini PDA phone with a screen that slides back and tilts to reveal a qwerty keyboard. Both these devices offer HSDPA capability for high-speed internet access.
