Nokia adds Google search to devices

Nokia and Google announce search tie-up at Mobile World Congress

Written by David Neal

Nokia will integrate Google's search tool within its own to boost the services it offers on its handsets, the firms said at Mobile World Congress.

"Adding Google to Nokia Search provides mobile users with fast, relevant and comprehensive search experience that will be familiar to the people who use Google to search the web from their desktop," said Google's vice president of Engineering and Products for Mobile, Vic Gundotra. "Google search combined with the high quality applications on Nokia devices help make information available to Nokia device users wherever they are and provide an excellent overall experience."

Nokia will start to offer the integrated search on a selection of its handsets to begin with, before rolling it out across its range. This first stage will see the combined tool appear on the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic, more devices will be announced over time.

At MWC various chip makers also demonstrated how Google's Android operating system will run on a mobile phone. Android was demonstrated at MWC in Barcelona by firms including Texas Instruments and Samsung. LG Electronics, which announced its support at the launch of Android reiterated its plans to have a device out, if not this year then the next.

Android has the support of approximately thirty companies.
