Microsoft has bolstered its virtualisation product set with the acquisition of enterprise desktop virtualisation firm Kidaro. Financial details were not disclosed.

Commentators have suggested that desktop virtualisation could replicate the dramatic take-up previously seen at the server level adoption.

“Virtual PCs can help businesses address a number of challenges around application compatibility, mobility and business continuity," said Shanen Boettcher, general manager of Windows product management at Microsoft in a statement.

“The acquisition of Kidaro is an important component of our virtualisation strategy, and it delivers a powerful new tool to help enterprise customers optimise their desktops,” he added.

The software giant is attempting to make up ground on server virtualisation pioneer VMWare, and will ship its own server virtualisation product, Hyper V, in the coming months.
