SuperCore checks out 10Gbit/s connections

New WildPackets appliance allows firms to capture, store and analyse 10Gbit/s traffic

Written by Dave Bailey

Network and application analysis vendor WildPackets has used the Cisco Live! event in Orlando, Florida to launch an appliance designed to enable firms to store network traffic from high-bandwidth 10Gbit/s fibre connections.

The Omnipliance SuperCore appliance can use 4.8TB of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) storage or up to 16TB of the less expensive, but less powerful, Serial ATA (Sata) storage onboard. SuperCore can also use 19.2TB of SAS and up to 64TB of Sata external storage, has two PCI-X slots and 4GB of onboard system memory.

WildPackets' appliance uses the OmniAdaptor 10G, a full-duplex 10Gbit/s network analyser card based on the PCI-X standard. The system uses Intel hardware running under Red Hat Linux Enterprise Server 5.1.

After storing the data, WildPackets OmniEngine packet analysis system can be used to perform post-capture forensic data analysis.

As the price per port for 10Gbit/s fibre connectivity drops, even mid-market firms are now considering deploying optical fibre systems, according to the vendor.
