Xandros acquires Linspire

Linux firms Xandros and Linspire unite their distribution systems

Written by David Neal

Xandros, a provider of OEM Linux solutions announced today its purchase of Linspire, which develops desktop operating systems. The deal will add to Xandros' roster, which already includes desktop and server management tools and will contribute to its aims to become a "one stop Linux solutions company".

Linspire is the developer of the CNR one click digital software delivery system, and Xandros too offers digital distribution services, the aim is to make the two as complimentary as possible.

“Products like the ASUS Eee PC have demonstrated the huge potential market for Linux-based OEM netbook solutions, and CNR will help Xandros make these platforms easy to enhance and maintain, while providing on-demand delivery of a growing number of Linux applications, utilities, games, and content,” said Andreas Typaldos chief executive officer at Xandros. “Linspire’s CNR technologies will speed up Xandros’ expansion into the applications space and encourage the development of third party content critical for facilitating Linux adoption.”

“The Linux business is going through some healthy and necessary consolidation, which will give resulting companies greater assets and size to deliver on larger initiatives so Linux can touch more people” added Linspire Founder & Chairman Michael Robertson.
